Upland Field Education Program!!!

Bridging the Gap: A Pathway to Upland Hunting for Women

For those interested in a slower transition from curiosity to shooting and then hunting, our chapter offers a solution: a upland field education program. This option lets women spend the morning in the field with a shotgun instructor, following alongside a skilled hunter, a dog handler, and a trained bird dog. The instructor explains the rules of hunting and educates participants about the roles of the hunter, the dog handler, and the bird dog, as well as bird behavior and habitat. In this format, the day is shared with female hunters, gun dogs, and their handlers, and attendees enjoy lunch together, forging camaraderie and lasting connections, friendships, and mentorships. For some, the process feels more manageable, and even if a participant decides not to hunt, they still leave with valuable exposure in the understanding of ethical and sustainable hunting, pollinator habitat.

Understanding the Hurdles

Our chapter recognizes these challenges because we have encountered them frequently. We have engaged with women who are interested in exploring upland hunting but are uncertain about how to begin. To address this need, we have developed a program designed to support the transition from initial curiosity to ethical and sustainable hunting.

earn-to-Shoot Seminars

Our program starts with learn-to-shoot seminars offered twice a year. These sessions cover shotgun safety, determining eye dominance, and the different types of shotguns, one may desire to purchase. It also includes shooting instructions and discussion on ammunition with plenty of hands-on time to try out multiple models. The emphasis is not just on technique but on helping participants understand how different shotguns feel and perform, so each woman can make an informed choice when it’s time to purchase.

Mentor-Led Practice Plans

Beyond the seminars, we provide a mentor-led practice plan that helps participants build fundamentals at a comfortable pace. This includes basic marksmanship with patient coaching, and a combination of dry-fire drills and controlled live-fire practice. The idea is to develop a solid base of confidence and accuracy before stepping into the field.

Safety Certification Guidance

Obtaining the required safety certificate is the next milestone, and we know that for many, this involves navigating state licensing requirements. We’ve designed a path that makes the process less intimidating and more achievable, emphasizing safety, legality, and ethical hunting practices.

From there, we transition to field readiness. We provide equipment guidance—boots, clothing, shotgun selection, and appropriate ammunition—to help women feel prepared for upland conditions. Our aim is to demystify gear choices and ensure that each participant feels comfortable and capable in the field. When appropriate, we offer guided or semi-guided upland hunts to give participants the opportunity to apply their learned skills.
